Montecastelli
Wine · PGI · 3 municipalities
Established in 2008, the Montecastelli IGT is a highly restricted Tuscan wine denomination confined to just three municipalities in the province of Pisa: Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, Pomarance, and Volterra. Unlike neighboring designations that celebrate historic estates, Montecastelli currently registers zero active producers. Its regulations are uniquely restrictive, explicitly banning the use of traditional quality terms such as Riserva, extra, fine, selezionato, or superiore on its labels. While vinification is permitted anywhere in Tuscany, any bottled red, such as the single-variety Sangiovese or Cabernet Franc, must achieve at least 12.0% alcohol by volume and adhere to a strict yield limit of 9.0 tonnes per hectare.
