Formazza

Formazza’s scattered alpine hamlets, situated in the namesake valley of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, experience an extreme mountain isolation that concentrates local flavors. This challenging geography is the cradle of Ossolano DOP, a firm raw-milk cheese produced across a restricted zone of 37 municipalities. The steep rocky slopes also yield the high-altitude flora required for Genepì del Piemonte IG. In total, 15 protected denominations overlap here, demonstrating how Formazza’s climate and specialized high-pasture practices transform rugged terrain into highly localized, internationally prized gastronomic specialties.
