Established in 1973 within the Marche region, the Bianchello del Metauro DOC encompasses thirteen municipalities including Fano and Cartoceto. What distinguishes this denomination from neighboring white wine appellations is its uncompromising varietal focus: the disciplinare demands a minimum of 95% Bianchello (Biancame) grapes, allowing only a minor complement of Malvasia bianca lunga. Furthermore, unlike many Italian DOCs, no Riserva category exists here. Instead, production is diversified into dry whites with a maximum yield of 14.0 tonnes per hectare, a sparkling Spumante, and a sweet Passito where the traditional appassimento grape-drying process is legally permitted to run until March 30 of the year following harvest.
