Mirto di Sardegna secured its official European Union Geographic Indication status as a spirit in 2008, defining a production zone that encompasses 377 distinct Sardinian municipalities, starting alphabetically with Abbasanta. This specific geographical boundary distinguishes the island's authentic myrtle liqueur from generic mainland imitations. However, the denomination presents a unique anomaly within the atlas of Italian spirits: despite its recognition and widespread cultural presence across Sardinia, the official registry currently lists zero verified producers. This means that while the spirit's geographic origin is legally protected, no commercial distiller has successfully completed the formal verification process to claim the official IG designation on their label.
