Ogliastra
Wine · PGI · 25 municipalities
The Ogliastra IGT, stretching across 25 Sardinian municipalities from the high elevations of Arzana to coastal Bari Sardo, presents a unique regulatory anomaly in Italian viticulture. To safeguard Sardinia's prestigious DOC and DOCG designations, this PGI strictly bans eleven of the island's most iconic grapes, including Cannonau and Vermentino, from appearing as single-varietal names on its labels. Instead, winemakers must rely on lesser-known, non-aromatic authorized varieties for their 85% single-varietal blends. Despite these distinctive rules and a generous red wine yield cap of 18.0 tonnes per hectare, the appellation remains a sleeping giant, currently recording zero verified active producers.
