Südtiroler Marille

Recognised since 1989, the Südtiroler Marille spirit denomination of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol occupies a highly unusual position among European geographical indications. Its official production zone encompasses 116 municipalities, including Aldino/Aldein and Andriano/Andrian, mapped out to protect the distillation of local apricots. However, this spirit is defined by a striking commercial paradox: it currently has zero verified producers registered. While apricot distillation continues across the region, no active distiller has certified their spirit under this specific name. This makes the denomination a dormant legal standard, preserved on paper but unused in active commercial bottling.
