Verona
Wine · PGI · 98 municipalities
Established in 1999, the Verona PGI encompasses 98 municipalities across the province, including Affi and Bardolino. While the designation permits a generous maximum yield of 25.0 tonnes per hectare and a low minimum alcohol level of 9.5% vol, it enforces highly specific labeling restrictions that set it apart from neighboring areas. Most notably, although Pinot grigio grapes are cultivated within the zone under a lower 19 tonnes per hectare limit, the wine's regulation strictly bans the name "Pinot grigio" from appearing on the bottle. Instead, winemakers utilizing the diverse local ampelography can legally label their youthful, cherry-scented red blends as "vivace" to denote their lively character.
