In the southeastern hills of Piedmont's Alessandria province, the tiny municipality of Grognardo—housing a mere 225 residents—channels its steep, sun-exposed terrain into 19 overlapping protected denominations. This pocket-sized commune is a crucial node for Dolcetto d'Acqui DOC, a highly localized red wine crafted within a restricted zone of just 23 municipalities. Grognardo's distinct microclimate also fuels the aromatic Asti DOCG, whose production is bounded to a zone of 51. These strict geographical boundaries ensure that Grognardo's small-scale winegrowers preserve a highly specific, terroir-driven viticulture found nowhere else in the Monferrato hills.
