San Candido/Innichen

In the alpine heights of the upper Puster Valley, where the Drava River begins near the Austrian border, the extreme mountain climate of San Candido/Innichen shapes a resilient alpine gastronomy. This borderland municipality hosts 15 protected denominations. The local climate is ideal for curing and baking, yielding the crunchy, herb-scented Südtiroler Schüttelbrot IGP flatbread. The harsh alpine winters also drove the mastery of distillation, preserved in spirits like the plum-based Südtiroler Zwetschgeler IG and the traditional mixed-fruit Südtiroler Obstler IG, which capture the intense aromas of high-altitude orchards.
