San Martino in Badia/St. Martin in Thurn

In the shadow of the Sas de Putia dolomite massif, San Martino in Badia’s high-altitude microclimate shapes its unique alpine gastronomy. Here, 15 protected denominations thrive within this Ladin-speaking valley. The steep terrain and isolation historically demanded preservation, giving rise to the rye-based Südtiroler Schüttelbrot IGP, a hard flatbread dry-cured to survive winters. On these sun-drenched lower slopes, orchard fruits are concentrated and fermented, then distilled into the fiery plum spirit Südtiroler Zwetschgeler IG, capturing the essence of the surrounding Dolomite peaks.
