Ortona
Wine · PDO · 1 municipality
Unlike neighboring Abruzzo appellations that span entire provinces, the Ortona DOC is strictly confined to its single namesake municipality of Ortona. Established in 2011, this highly localized designation mandates exceptionally concentrated blends; its red wines must contain at least 95% Montepulciano grapes, yielding a dry, full-bodied profile with a slightly spicy aroma and a minimum of 12.0% alcohol by volume. Furthermore, the rules eschew the typical lengthy aging categories of its regional peers, forbidding any riserva classification and permitting the red wines to be released as early as March 1st of the year following a harvest capped at 14.0 tonnes per hectare.
