Around Mondragone, the soil reveals its volcanic origin, and on this foundation, Alfieri Tommaso distributes his work across five denominations from the Caserta area. The poles are clear: the structured reds of Aglianico and Piedirosso from Falerno del Massico on one side, and the crisp whites of Asprinio di Aversa on the other. Between these extremes lie Galluccio and the two IGTs, Terre del Volturno and Roccamonfina, which broaden the scope without dispersing it. Five zones mean five different grammars—reds, reserves, sparkling wines—each with its minimum aging periods, alcohol levels, and permitted grape varieties. Navigating this mosaic demands precision more than ambition: a slight deviation in timing or varietal permissions can lead one outside the denomination. Alfieri approaches this as an exercise in adherence to rules, calibrating each label to its respective zone. The result is a broad yet focused portfolio, rooted in a Caserta identity that the volcano, even before the producer, helped to write into the soil.
