CARLO PELLEGRINO & C. S.p.A.

Founded in 1880, Carlo Pellegrino & C. operates from Marsala as a guardian of western Sicilian viticulture, but its denomination looks further afield: Pantelleria DOC. On the volcanic island, Zibibbo yields the passito and fortified wines that bear the house's name, the fruit of over one hundred and thirty-five years of work between vineyard and cellar. It is a wine of concentration, where dried grapes translate sun, wind, and volcanic soil into dense sweetness. The winery is worth visiting: the cellars on Via Paolo Pellegrino, in Marsala, show firsthand how altitude and volcanic terroir shape each vintage of Pantelleria. Deep institutional roots place the house among Sicily's most established producers, but it is in the journey through the barrels that the connection with Pantelleria ceases to be just a label and becomes tangible.
