'L Garbin

'L Garbin cultivates the slopes of Chiomonte, in Valsusa, an Alpine valley at the gates of Turin where roots must make their way through rocky and steep terrain. The producer works with the native Piedmontese grape varieties of the denomination — Barbera, Dolcetto, Neretta Cuneese, and the rare Avanà — and each responds in its own way to the altitude and exposure of the slope. Here, viticulture is inherently heroic: slopes that preclude mechanization, high altitudes, a geology that dictates timing more than the calendar. The result is red wines and a few whites that speak of rock and altitude more than enological practice, with a tense and vibrant note that belongs to the mountains. A single DOC, Valsusa, but interpreted as a territorial document: each bottle records the slope's inclination, the poverty of the soil, and the effort of cultivation that persists where it would be easier to abandon. It is the wine of an Alpine frontier, where the vine marks the extreme limit of what is possible.
