Capriano del Colle

Wine · PDO · 2 municipalities

Distinct from surrounding Northern Italian appellations, this Lombardy wine zone is exceptionally compact, restricted to just two municipalities—Capriano del Colle and Poncarale—where only nine verified producers bottle the wine. Historically, these vines were cultivated partly for health reasons, as local communities believed the wine helped combat pellagra. Recognized since 1981, the DOC features a signature red blend requiring at least 40% Marzemino (locally known as Berzemino), 20% Merlot, and 10% Sangiovese. This combination yields a dry, sapid, and harmonious ruby-red wine with a minimum alcohol content of 10.5% vol, while a specialized 100% monovarietal Marzemino is also permitted.
