In Vezza d'Alba, since 1970, Daniela Olivero has overseen four controlled and guaranteed denominations within the UNESCO World Heritage Roero region. Nebbiolo dictates the highest registers: Barbaresco, with at least twenty-six months of aging, and Barolo, extended to thirty-eight, translate into a mineral character a territory that emerged from the sea over three million years ago. Dolcetto completes the picture in two expressions—Dogliani, spanning twenty-one municipalities, and Diano d'Alba, confined to just one—both with a minimum of 12% alcohol by volume. This range is built on contrasts: the two great, long-aging reds on one side, the more immediate Dolcetto wines on the other, all rooted in the same marine geology that gives the wines their backbone. The distinction between twenty-one municipalities and just one illustrates how Roero can be stratified into minute areas, each with its own voice.
