In Berbenno di Valtellina, within the Maroggia subzone, Assoviuno cultivates eight hectares divided into five historic plots, each with its own unique and unrepeatable qualities. This is mountain viticulture, characterized by small surfaces and terraces, where fragmentation is not a limitation but the very map of the wines' character. Matteo Tarotelli's management carries on the teachings of his grandfather Guerrino: to see the vineyard as a custodian of a collective land rather than exclusive property, a stance that guides choices and rhythms. The two denominations of the house, Valtellina Superiore DOCG and Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG, both rely on Nebbiolo, here called Chiavennasca. Their respective regulations impose prolonged aging, from 20 to 24 months, the time this grape needs to dissolve its alpine rigor into complexity. The winery is open for visits: coming here and traversing the five plots of Maroggia, glass in hand, is the most direct way to understand why every vineyard in Valtellina is a story unto itself.
