Az. Agricola "La Quena" di Berzacola Domenico
Negrar di Valpolicella · Province of Verona · Veneto
On the slopes of the Lessini mountains in Negrar, La Quena works with two denominations that share grapes and origin but not destiny: Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella. At their base are Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, and Rondinella, the local grape varieties appreciated since Roman times, and the *appassimento* (drying) practice that unites them before vinification. The company's Amarone ages for at least 24 months and reaches 14% alcohol through rigorously conducted harvesting and *appassimento*; Recioto represents its sweet counterpart, from the same grape stock. First place at the Palio Recioto e Amarone 2023 measures the success of this approach. Here, the character of Valpolicella—the altitude, the geological matrix, the proximity to Lake Garda—translates directly into the glass. The winery welcomes visitors for tastings: the most immediate way to understand how climate and soil shape two such different wines from the same grapes.
