Baroni di Pianogrillo
On a panoramic hill in the ancient county of Modica, Baroni di Pianogrillo preserves a rare stratification: a medieval watchtower that became a Ragusan-style manor house in the 18th century, a Roman-era lava stone mill, and an early Christian necropolis within the estate's boundaries. The landscape tells centuries of stories even before the glass does. Two denominations currently define their production. The Sicilia DOC is born from Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese, alongside international grape varieties, while the Sicilia IGP extra virgin olive oil adheres to stringent parameters—acidity within 0.5% and at least 100 mg/kg of total polyphenols—with those green tomato notes that mark the island's profile. Wine and oil proceed in parallel, complementary interpretations of the same volcanic soil and climate. The breadth of the two denominations, extended to the entire island and its hundreds of municipalities, does not dilute the identity of the place: here, the terroir remains that specific to Modica, measured more by stone and history than by administrative boundaries.
