From Matelica, in the Macerata area, Mario Basilissi brings together four DOCG denominations, each demanding a different craft. From Vernaccia nera di Serrapetrona, he derives two opposing expressions: a lively sparkling wine with pressure and dark fruit, and a full-bodied red. The Marche seaside aspect is represented by Cònero, an assemblage of Montepulciano and Sangiovese aged for two years to build the tannic structure required by the denomination. The white wine chapter revolves entirely around Verdicchio, interpreted in two territorial keys: the version from the narrow Matelica basin, more taut and vertical, and that from Castelli di Jesi, both in Riserva typology. Each wine respects the minimum alcohol content and aging periods set by the regulations, but Basilissi's choices go beyond mere compliance: they aim to make legible the specific characteristics that enthusiasts seek when opening a Marche DOCG, distinguishing technical skill from simple bureaucratic conformity.
