Buttari Antonella
Avezzano · Province of L'Aquila · Abruzzo
Buttari Antonella cultivates Patata del Fucino IGP in Avezzano, its sole denomination, on the drained valley floors of the L'Aquila area where Lake Fucino once lay. The rich, mineral soil yields tubers with a regular shape and adherent skin, results of conditions difficult to replicate outside this basin. The plateau's altitude and soil composition work together even before planting: they determine the potato's compactness and uniformity, qualities that generations of growers have learned to understand and accommodate. On an industrial scale, these same conditions cannot be reproduced, and therein lies the meaning of the geographical indication—to link a common vegetable to a specific place. Buttari's production supports one of Abruzzo's most recognized vegetable denominations, keeping the cultivation alive in one of the few Italian areas where the potato becomes a protected product of origin, rather than a simple field commodity.
