In Mombercelli, in the Asti region, the Cantina Sociale channels the slate-grey hills of Monferrato into three protected denominations, each with a different territorial scope. Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato builds its reds on Ruchè, Barbera, and Brachetto across seven municipalities; Terre Alfieri broadens its gaze to eleven areas with structured whites and reds; Barbera d'Asti, aged for at least four months, extends over one hundred and sixty-five municipalities. It's a scale ranging from niche to large area, overseen by a single collective entity. The cooperative form itself is the key to understanding: many contributors, many parcels, brought together in a common vinification that combines shared knowledge and the expression of individual vineyards. The result is a vertical portfolio, capable of narrating the Asti terroirs across three degrees of geographical scale.
