Cantine del Notaio
Rionero in Vulture · Province of Potenza · Basilicata
On the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture, Cantine del Notaio has cultivated Aglianico since 1998, gathering the knowledge of seven generations of the Giuratrabocchetti family. The sole denomination produced here, Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG, expresses itself as a wine of mineral complexity and structure, rooted in a terroir that Romans and medieval viticulturists had already recognized as extraordinary. The geology of the place directly influences the wine. Cavities carved into volcanic tufa rock offer ideal conditions for aging, and there the reds rest in French oak barrels for the thirty-six months mandated by the production regulations. The result is an Aglianico that combines power and clarity, a testament to a soil that continues to dictate the rules of taste. The winery is open for visits: descending into the tufa caves, where the barrels silently await the completion of maturation, is the most direct way to understand how Vulture transforms its volcanic origin into wine.
