Cascina Chicco
In Roero, amidst the hillside villages stretching from Canale to Monforte d'Alba, Cascina Chicco manages over fifty scattered hectares, the result of a precise choice: to assign each grape variety to the area best suited to it, following a criterion refined over four generations. The landscape dictates the rules, and the winery simply listens. The work continues underground, in cellars of exposed terracotta bricks where gypsum crystals emerge from the subsoil — the same geology later found in the glass. Here, Nebbiolo, Arneis, and other indigenous grape varieties mature for at least twenty months, translating soil and microclimate into the red, white, and sparkling wines that bear the Roero DOCG name. The winery is open for visits, and the experience has a dual focus: descending to read the rock from which the wine is born, and ascending to drink it, verifying firsthand how the philosophy of terroir here coincides with the physical matter of the soil.
