Cascina Gentile
Capriata d'Orba · Province of Alessandria · Piemonte
Five hectares on the Il Gazzolo hill, in Capriata d'Orba, tell the story of three generations of the same family: here, Giovanni Gentile planted the first vineyard in the early 1960s, and since then, the cascina has overlooked the rows that gaze towards both Ovada and Gavi. The sole denomination, Dolcetto di Ovada Superiore, concentrates all the winery's work into a structured red, which the *disciplinare* requires to have at least 12.5% alcohol and twelve months of aging before bottling. It's a Dolcetto far from the grape variety's usual lightness. The volcanic soils impart a mineral firmness that defines its profile, accompanied by notes of dried plum and a longevity that rewards patience. The choice of a single origin, cultivated where the terroir is most demanding, speaks to the identity of this family estate: a few hectares, one denomination, and a constant interpretation of the soil that the vineyards have faced for over sixty years.
