At the summit of Altavilla, commanding a panoramic view that embraces Alba and the Barbaresco hills, Cascina Piccaluga by Roberto Abellonio gathers four Piedmontese DOCG denominations. Two originate from the estate's own vineyards — Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba and Dogliani, both direct expressions of Dolcetto — while Barolo and Barbaresco come from partner sites in the most prized areas of the Langhe. It's an honest division of labor: what the estate cultivates and what it selects elsewhere, without confusing the two. The philosophy is declared in the glass before it is in words: wines founded on study and sobriety, without daring fanciful blends, where vineyard care matters more than cellar invention. The Nebbiolo of the two great DOCGs and the Dolcetto of the two lesser ones tell the same story of discipline applied to different registers. The winery opens its doors to visitors: ascend to Altavilla for the three-hundred-and-sixty-degree view and to follow, glass in hand, how the gesture in the vineyard becomes wine.
