Santa Maria La Nave

At 1100 metres on Etna's north-west flank, Santa Maria La Nave tends some of Europe's highest vineyards across ancient lava fields. A 15-year massale selection from ungrafted vines yielded their Grecanico Dorato, producing Millesulmare—a mountain wine that carries volcanic minerals alongside coastal salt air. On the steeper south-east slope, pre-phylloxeric Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio vines yield their Etna Rosso Doc, Calmarossa, marked by volcanic precision. Yields average just 800 grams per plant; total production remains under one numbered bottle per vine.
