Antoniolo

In Gattinara, Nebbiolo takes on a different name, Spanna, and on these volcanic soils, Antoniolo crafts wines of structure and longevity. The winery operates across two contiguous denominations in northeastern Piemonte, both founded on the same grape variety but with distinct outcomes. The Gattinara DOCG requires thirty-five months of aging for reds built on Nebbiolo with the support of Vespolina and Uva Rara; the Ghemme DOCG starts from a minimum of thirty-four months and develops similar blended wines into equally complex expressions. The comparison between the two areas is key to understanding this winery: the same grape, related volcanic soils, but nuances that time in the cellar allows to emerge. As an active and open winery, it's well worth the journey to taste Gattinara and Ghemme side-by-side, experiencing firsthand the austere and long-lived character that this corner of Piemonte imparts to Spanna.
