Gattinara

Wine · PDO · 1 municipality

Restricted entirely to its single eponymous municipality in Piemonte, the Gattinara DOCG represents a highly localized expression of Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna. While neighboring appellations often spread across broad landscapes, Gattinara’s terroir is cultivated by just 91 verified producers within this lone township. Recognized since 1973, the appellation enforces a minimum of 35 months of ageing, with at least 24 months spent in wood. Its specific blend allows Nebbiolo, at a minimum of 90%, to be combined with Vespolina, which is restricted to a maximum of 4%. This yields a dry, garnet-red wine marked by spicy violet aromas and a characteristic bitterish finish.
