Azienda Agricola Scala
Cirò Marina · Province of Crotone · Calabria
Azienda Agricola Scala presides over a strip of the Ionian coast in Cirò Marina, in the province of Crotone, where the winery was founded in 1949 by grandfather Antonio, who converted an old farmhouse into a winemaking facility. Since then, production has revolved around two contiguous Calabrian denominations, Cirò DOC and Melissa DOC, both rooted in the Crotonese hinterland and entrusted to local grape varieties: Gaglioppo as the main voice, flanked by Magliocco and Greco Bianco. This work depends on the region's sunny Mediterranean climate, where ancient vines ripen to reach the minimum alcohol content of twelve percent that marks the appellation's identity. In the family's hands, the two DOCs become complementary faces of a single landscape, offering full-bodied reds and crisp whites, without losing the memory of the original farmhouse. The territory, more than a backdrop, remains the measure by which each harvest is evaluated and recounted.
