Melissa
Wine · PDO · 14 municipalities
Recognized since 1981, the Melissa DOC in Calabria highlights the regional Gaglioppo grape, which must compose at least 75 percent of its red blend. While neighboring Calabrian appellations often rely on a standard 'Riserva' designation for aged bottles, Melissa differentiates itself by completely omitting this tier. Instead, the denomination uses the 'Superiore' classification as its sole aged category for reds. To qualify, 59 verified producers must age the wine for at least two years starting November 1 of the harvest year, developing a ruby hue with orange highlights, an ethereal aroma, and a minimum 13.00% alcohol volume.
