Barbaglia Silvia

In Cavallirio, nestled in the hills of northern Piedmont, Silvia Barbaglia works alongside her father Sergio on just over four hectares of vineyard. The winery embraces two protected denominations—Gattinara and Ghemme, both DOCG—which represent the pinnacle of Alto Piemonte and demand long waiting times from the Nebbiolo grape. Here, the grape takes on the local name Spanna and rests for an extended period before release: thirty-five months for one, thirty-four for the other, the necessary time for structure and complexity to reach the measure these territories demand. The winemaking is precise, attentive to the terroir rather than mere effect, finding a demanding testing ground in these two DOCGs. The winery welcomes visitors: a tasting of its reds remains the most direct way to grasp the difference between two denominations geographically close yet distinct in the glass—an invitation to read Alto Piemonte bottle by bottle.
