🏡 Tastings & visitsGattinara DOCGGhemme DOCG

In Gattinara, in the Vercelli area of upper Piedmont, Caligaris Luca works with Nebbiolo, which here takes the name Spanna, alongside Vespolina and Uva Rara. There are two denominations, both DOCG and distinct in character: Gattinara, aged for at least thirty-five months, and Ghemme, which gathers grapes from two municipalities and follows a strict aging protocol of thirty-four months. These are long periods, imposed by the regulations and embraced by the house style. The result is red wines that seek the mineral intensity and tannic architecture of the great wines of northern Piedmont, where the soils and long stays in wood build a severe rather than opulent structure. The winery is open to visitors: tastings organized in the cellar remain the best way to grasp the difference between two geographically close but distinct denominations, and to understand how the same grape can change its voice by moving just a few kilometers, from one side to another of this corner of Piedmont.
