Cantina Tollo
Tollo · Province of Chieti · Abruzzo
In Tollo, in the province of Chieti, the eponymous winery manages an unusually broad spectrum of six Denominazioni di Origine Controllata, covering almost the entire oenological geography of Abruzzo. This ranges from the compact zone of Villamagna to the vast areas of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, extending over one hundred and eighty-nine municipalities, with regional and territorial denominations like Abruzzo, Controguerra, and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo in between. Within this breadth, production remains focused on two pillars: Montepulciano reds and Trebbiano whites, the native grape varieties best adapted to the regional climate. Around them, a range unfolds, from leaner rosés to more structured reserves, each designed to reflect a nuance of the Chieti terroir. The multiplicity of denominations does not lead to dispersion but to a systematic mapping of the region: a single producer traversing different scales, from a single valley to a vast interprovincial area, yet maintaining a clear center of gravity around the two grape varieties that define Abruzzo's wine identity.
