Cantine BRUNI
Melissa · Province of Crotone · Calabria
In Melissa, on the Ionian side of the Crotone area, Cantine BRUNI roots its work in an ancient Calabrian viticulture, documented in Latin texts and mythologized in tales of Cretan settlement. Two denominations define its identity. Cirò DOC is based on Gaglioppo and other red grapes suitable for the territory, offered in rosso, superiore, and superiore riserva styles with at least 12.0% vol. Alongside it flows Melissa DOC, which broadens the scope to include a white version crafted from Greco nero, Greco bianco, and Trebbiano Toscano. In this dualism—red and white, two contiguous denominations within the same protected area of fourteen municipalities—one discerns a producer faithful to the specificity of the place rather than the breadth of a catalog. There is no rhetoric in their operation: there is a desire to make the wine coincide with the land that generates it, without forcing its character. The winery does not receive visitors, but remains a reference for those who wish to understand Calabrian enology where it originated.
