Cantine Olivella
Sant'Anastasia · Province of Napoli · Campania
The roots of Cantine Olivella date back to 1963, when the Cozzolino and Giordano families first showcased Catalanesca at an exhibition on the slopes of Mount Somma. Today, fifteen hectares of vineyards climb the oldest north-western side of the volcano, between three hundred and six hundred and fifty meters, with ungrafted roots anchored to a primordial volcanic terroir. The winery manages three denominations, Vesuvio DOC along with Pompeiano and Catalanesca del Monte Somma IGT, articulating a range that spans from dry whites to passiti, as well as reds and rosés. It's a spectrum that captures the mineral essence of the Vesuvian soil, tempered by the sea breeze that ascends the slopes. Altitude and exposure work together with the nature of the soil to produce wines that tell the story of a volcano as much as a grape variety, particularly the Catalanesca that the house has helped bring back into focus. Those who come here can walk the rows between three hundred and six hundred and fifty meters and taste the three denominations on site, reading the slope directly from the glass.
