Catalanesca del Monte Somma
Wine · PGI · 9 municipalities
Recognized in 2011, the Catalanesca del Monte Somma IGT represents a highly localized winemaking zone surrounding Vesuvius, spanning nine municipalities including Massa di Somma. Cultivated by 31 verified producers, the wines must contain at least 85% of the rare Catalanesca bianca grape, yielding a minimum of 12.0% alcohol. While most regional Indicazione Geografica Tipica regulations allow for flexible labeling, this specific denomination distinguishes itself through a strict, mandatory requirement to display the vintage (annata) on the label. New vineyard plantings must adhere to a density of at least 3,300 vines per hectare, trained exclusively using the simple espalier method.
