Vesuvio

Wine · PDO · 16 municipalities

Recognised since 1996 across 16 municipalities including Boscoreale and Ercolano, the Vesuvio DOC distinguishes itself from neighbouring Campanian zones by its unusually large number of official styles. While the base red wine requires at least 50% Piedirosso, the denomination allows separate single-varietals and a stricter Lacryma Christi category. This premium tier enforces lower yields, down to 8.5 tonnes per hectare for superior versions. Crucially, while most of the denomination's styles require no minimum aging, the Lacryma Christi rosso riserva stands as the sole variant with a mandatory 24-month aging period, which must include wood maturation.
