Cantine VINCENZO IPPOLITO
Cirò Marina · Province of Crotone · Calabria
In Cirò Marina, on the Ionian coast of the Crotone area, Cantine Vincenzo Ippolito represents Calabria's oldest winemaking reality, active since the early 19th century. Over one hundred hectares of vineyards descend from the hills towards the sea, and on this land, two Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) denominations take shape, Cirò and Melissa, built around Gaglioppo and indigenous Greco varieties. The thread that unifies the production is the recovery of indigenous grape varieties: Calabrese, Pecorello, and Greco Nero return to the forefront thanks to constant research and direct control of the entire supply chain. It's a patient work, less focused on immediate effect and more on bringing out territorial identity and balance in each wine. Two centuries of presence in a territory have not crystallized the winery into a museum-like stance: the choice to focus on local varieties is, if anything, a forward-looking perspective, which sees Calabria's ampelographic heritage as the raw material for its future, between the Ionian Sea and the first inland hills.
