CASCINA ALLEGRA
Ottiglio · Province of Alessandria · Piemonte
In Ottiglio, among the Alessandria hills of Monferrato, Cascina Allegra tackles one of Italy's broadest denominations: Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, distributed across over two hundred municipalities. Within such a vast perimeter, the choice of the individual producer counts double. Here, Barbera remains the main voice, traditionally flanked by Freisa, Grignolino, and Dolcetto, grapes that add body and nuances without overshadowing the leading variety. The Superiore status requires at least fourteen months of aging, and in that time, the wine loses its edginess and finds the tannic structure that distinguishes it from vintage Barbera. The character is that of a red with depth, designed for the table and for a few years in the bottle rather than immediate consumption. The winery's work combines deep roots in the territory with cellar discipline, two qualities that rarely exclude each other. Tastings are open year-round: a visit to Ottiglio allows one to read Monferrato in the glass, municipality by municipality.
