Valcalepio

Wine · PDO · 42 municipalities

Recognised since 1982, the Valcalepio DOC in Lombardy covers 42 municipalities, where 16 verified producers craft structured wines. What distinguishes this denomination from other Northern Italian reds is its rigorous Merlot-Cabernet blueprint: the base red must blend a minimum of 40% Merlot with at least 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by 12 months of mandatory ageing, including at least 3 months in wood. For the sweet Moscato Passito, the regulation offers a unique geographic specificity; producers can print the name of individual communes, such as Gandosso, directly on the label when grapes are sourced entirely from these historic sub-zones.
